Notes: Excerpts from "History and Genealogy of the John Burton Pleasant Family o f Lawrence County, Indiana": "William Coxe came to Virginia in June 1610 aboard the Goodspeed, one o f three ships in Lord Delaware's fleet when he came to govern the Colon y of Virginia. William Coxe lived on the James River about 9 miles belo w present day Richmond. The city of Newport News is now located on thes e properties. On September 20, 1628 he received his "Ancient Planter's" g rant of 100 acres, recorded in Land Book 1 Part 1 Page 89. The location i s identified in this and other adjoining patents as in Harwood's Neck a nd bounded on the west by Deep Creek, on the south side by the James Ri ver. To the east there were other patents and a smaller creek known as W ater's Creek. Robert Hutchins, Mariner, had received a grant some years e arlier - perhaps as early as 1621, a mention of which is made hereon ac count of the association of the two families for several generations." This land was once in Elizabeth City County, then Warwick County, a cou nty that no longer exists. William Coxe lived near Robert Hutchins and m arried his daughter, Elizabeth. William Coxe was adjacent landowner to J ohn Burton and William's daughter Mary or Catherine married John Burton . John Burton came to Virginia in 1625.
